Hurricane Relief Sale (Goodbye Miami)

Share the joy

My novel, Goodbye Miami, is on sale for 99 cents now through Monday (9/11). 100% of the proceeds of this sale will go to grassroots relief efforts for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Goodbye Miami is the story of an American climate refugee who is displaced by a devastating hurricane that leaves the city of Miami underwater. It takes place in the year 2030. Unfortunately, there are real people in the present day who are already being displaced by hurricanes and wildfires that were made more intense by human-caused climate change.

This novel is part of my ongoing effort to write fiction and poetry that inspires serious thought, discussion, and action in the service of climate justice. Hopefully this sale will help spread the word and raise some funds for grassroots relief efforts.

If you prefer to donate directly to an organization rather than (or in addition to!) buying this novel, please refer to the following list of grassroots relief and recovery options.

Relief & Recovery For Hurricanes Harvey & Irma

Are you looking for ways to help those affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma? Here’s a list of grassroots groups that have been recommended to me by friends. This is by no means an exhaustive list. However, it should give you a few good ideas for where to start.

  • Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (TEJAS). “One of the most dangerous unaddressed issues is chemicals present in floodwater. Our focus will be low-income areas that sit on the fence-line of refineries, chemical storage facilities and industrial zones. These are homes that are at the highest risk of toxic waters. Our efforts will focus on cleanup efforts in these frontline communities,” t.e.j.a.s. Executive Director Juan Parras.
  • Austin to Houston – Harvey Relief. (This was started by Kerrville Folk Festival volunteers with local Southern Illinois connections). “Anyone in Austin or Central Texas with heart, time or resources (money, trucks, boats, tools) is invited to contribute to a community effort helping our Houston family in all possible ways in the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Harvey. 8/28/17”
  • Altruist Relief. “Altruist Relief volunteers are responding to Hurricane Harvey in the lowest income communities in Houston with our unique industrial kitchen capable of serving 100 GALLONS OF FOOD EVERY FEW HOURS USING ONLY RENEWABLE RESOURCES. It’s housed in our unique 2000 square foot Rapid Response Tents that resemble gigantic Siberian tepees. We also provide a high volume of filtered water and many other basic emergency services, all while maintaining radical logistic and financial transparency through the use of the LucidLorax Youtube channel, showing you both what we do, and every dollar we spend.”
  • Greater Houston Grassroots Relief. “We’re a grassroots coalition of groups from the greater Houston community coming together to offer direct support to our neighbors most impacted by #HurricaneHarvey. We believe in helping each other instead of relying on corporations or the State which clearly do not have our best interests at heart. We need your help to respond to this crisis!”
  • Direct Action For Hurricane Irma by The Yellow Hammer Alternative. “We have assembled a grassroots coalition of groups that will offer DIRECT support to the communities particularly in Florida that will be affected by this storm.”
  • Supporting SBISD Families. This fundraiser will provide funds to support families of students and staff who have been adversely impacted by flooding in their homes as a result of Hurricane Harvey. The funds will be administered by the Spring Branch Education Foundation.
  • Friends For Life No Kill Animal Shelter. A small, LEED certified no-kill shelter in Houston which is one of many that needs donations to help the displaced pets in the city, as well as funds to run their day-to-day operations!
  • Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation. Donations to TVMF Disaster fund will go directly to helping pets affected by Hurricane Harvey.
