Carbondale, Illinois is a city located in the beautiful Shawnee bioregion (Southern Illinois, USA) with a population of about 25,000 people. On this page, you'll find information about some of the area's resources, both online and off. I also have an entire page devoted to Live Foods in Carbondale. Let me know if you have any additions or corrections, and I hope you enjoy the tour of Carbondale!
Local Organizations
Big Muddy IMC = The Big Muddy Independent Media Center is Southern Illinois' resource for independent news and commentary. Guests of the site can become grassroots reporters, clicking on a link to submit their own articles and comments. Big Muddy IMC organizers also put otgether a Features column in the center of the site to highlight urgent, late-breaking, and exceptional news stories. With Big Muddy IMC, you too can Be The Media!
Farmer's Market of Carbondale = The Southern Illinois venue for locally grown or produced items, from food to crafts and beyond. This is where you'll find the freshest produce at the best values in Carbondale. Farmers such as Steve Smith and Patrick and Shari Sweeny offer ecologically grown produce without chemical pesticides and herbicides. Saturday Mornings (Rain or Shine!), from 8 -12, April thru November, just west of Murdale Shopping Center.
Interfaith Center = The Interfaith Center is home to many wonderful spiritual, ecological, and community programs. I've been going there for almost seven years now, and I intend to keep on going for as long as I live in Carbondale.
International Grocery = The International Grocery, located at 1811 West Main Street in the Murdale Shopping Center, is Carbondale's one and only source for many food products from other nations. They don't have their own website, but this link will take you to an international student page that includes an entry about the role of this grocery in the community and the foods that you can find there. [But please ignore the articles on Wal-Mart and Barnes and Noble! A big BOO to those corporations invading our community!] My personal favorite foods at the International Grocery are young coconuts and durians.
Neighborhood Co-op = The Neighborhood Co-op is the only place in Carbondale to find a wide selection of healthy organic foods.
Rosetta Stone Bookstore = Rosetta Stone Bookstore is your community resouce for independent, international, art, and alternative films, books, magazines, and periodicals. We're located near campus, just down the block from Quattros Pizza. Stop in today, and let us help you to Decipher Your World!
Shawnee Network = This wonderful resource provides you with a diverse and plentiful collection of news, pictures, and links of interest to the community and ecology of Carbondale and Southern Illinois.
Southern Illinois Pagan Alliance = The Southern Illinois Pagan Alliance (SIPA) promotes Networking, Community Building, and Service Opportunities for the Pagan community of Southern Illinois and the surrounding region. SIPA also provides education about Paganism and outreach to the broader community. Their goal is to promote unity, equality, and acceptance for all spiritual paths.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale = While it is by no means a community organization, SIUC plays a central role in the community life of Carbondale and the entire region.
Student Environmental Center = The Student Environmental Center (SEC) introduced me both to activism and to my love of the Earth. They are the first resource in our region for students who want information and action on ecological issues.
WDBX = WDBX 91.1 FM is Your Community Radio for Southern Illinois. On Friday at 10 am, be sure to check out Your Community Spirit with hosts Aur Beck and Treesong.
