Attending: Steve Bracewell, Paula Bradshaw, Lee Hartman, Sarah Heyer, Genevieve Houghton, Charlie Howe, E.G. Hughes, Anton Kvernes, Rich Whitney.
1. Announcements:
a. Candidates' forum (sponsored by American Association
of University Women and United Nations Association of the USA) -- October
14, 7:00 p.m., SIU Law School Auditorium.
b. Islam, panel discussion, Sept. 26, Interfaith Center, Carbondale.
c. Latino Arts Festival, Sept. 27-28, SIU.
d. Film, "Winter Soldier Hearings", Big Muddy IMC,
Sept. 26, sponsored by Iraq Veterans Against the War.
2. Treasurer’s Report: E.G. reported a starting balance of $337.25, minus $125 for an Illinois Green Party banner (which, if loaned out in the future, will require a $100 security deposit). Next month we expect a $56 expenditure to WDBX for the radio program "Green Futures", and $25 for the "Green Pages" newspaper. New balance: $131.25.
3. State Membership Meeting, Sept. 13, Springfield. Proposed Bylaws revisions were accepted by consensus, with only one stand-aside concern, about the Executive Committee being elected by the Membership instead of the Coordinating Committee. Officers elected: Chair, Phil Huckelberry; Vice Chair, Julie Samuels; Treasurer, A.J. Segneri; Membership Steward, Pat Oldendorf; Secretary, David Black. Locals were urged to arrange poll-watchers for November 4.
4. Campaign reports: Rich reported that our
booth at Carbondale Pig-Out gathered several new contacts. He outlined
the general plan for canvassing for Howe, Jennings, and McKinney, to alternate
between towns north and south of Carbondale, moving from far to near, and
culminating with Carbondale and Murphysboro the last weekends before the
election. He reported there will probably be a joint Howe/Jennings
fundraiser at Turley Park (Carbondale) on October 11, after the SIU Homecoming
parade.
Charlie reported on the parade float he constructed, and on the
role of it and Rodger Jennings's campaign vehicle in the Murphysboro Apple
Festival parade.
There was discussion of ways to enlist greater participation
in campaign activities. Genevieve suggested the SGP mailing list
could be divided among us for telephoning. Lee, as Secretary, agreed
to prepare and distribute such phoning lists, specifically to invite people
to take part in the SIU Homecoming parade and neighborhood canvassing.
5. ILGP Business: Charlie reported that the ILGP has received a couple of large donations recently and has allocated $5,000 to help with electoral campaigns.
6. "Con-Con": Should Illinois hold a Constitutional Convention? Voters will be presented with this question on the November ballot. State Green Party leaders seem to be more pro than con.
7. Carbondale City Council elections: Petitioning to run for the Council is open from now to December 15. Three seats are up for election. Candidates can get platform ideas from Greens who have held local office elsewhere.
8. Financial bailout: United for Peace and Justice wants nationwide protests of the proposed bailout on Thursday, Sept. 25. Some Shawnee Greens will participate, along with the Peace Coalition. Much discussion ensued.
9. Meeting adjourned.
