Support This Site

I've created a new page called "Support This Site" which explains the many ways that you can support treesong.org. If you like what you see here, then now is your chance to participate! Help this site flourish by sharing it with others, submitting your own content, offering financial support, or supporting local community organizations here in Southern Illinois.

Spam Sux

Due to a growing amount of spam on this site, I've changed the configuration so that you have to log in before you can post a comment on a story.

If you need any help creating or accessing a user account, let me know. You can still submit stories, links, etc. anonymously since those haven't been problem areas (so far!). And if you still want to be anonymous in your comments, you can create a user account that doesn't contain any of your personal information.

Adrenal Burnout

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, I wrote a Song of the Trees entry comparing myself to the Six Million Dollar Man. I recognized that the insanities of today's society had left me shattered and expressed my commitment to rebuild myself from top to bottom using my knowledge of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and empowerment.

Well, it looks like I've still got about $5.9 million of repair work left!

Why, you ask? I've certainly made leaps and bounds in the realms of emotion, mind, heart, and spirit. I've also ensured that despite all odds, I survived the carnage that was wrought upon my flesh by my own mind and by the psychic assaults visited upon me by this society. For a time, it was an impressive comeback! But now, my new holistic doctor has diagnosed me with a severe case of adrenal burnout.

Love Outshines Hate

On Wednesday, Oct 19, Judy Shepherd -- mother of Matthew Sheperd and speaker on issues of diversity -- was scheduled to speak at SIUC here in Carbondale. Due to illness, the event was cancelled. Even so, a dozen members of Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church came to town to spread their message of hate. In response, over three hundred SIUC students and Southern Illinois community members turned out to share a message of love and acceptance that outshined all efforts at spewing hatred.

SIU Students Get a Free Ride

The Saluki Cycles program made it onto the front page of the Carbondale Times this week and has been recognized in other media outlets since its launch. This program allows SIUC students to go to the Rec Center and borrow a bike for a day for free. For more information, contact the Student Environmental Center at 618-351-6308 or the Base Camp of the Rec Center at 618-453-1287.

Photo by Jesse Riechman from the Carbondale Times. As you can see in the photo, one of the bikes is named Starhawk after the renowned author, activist, and spiritual teacher who has been a major inspiration in my life.
