Thank you to everyone who voted in my Patreon poll! Here’s an overview of the poll results and next steps for my Patreon campaign.

Patreon Poll Results

The poll asked people what member rewards and goals would inspire them to subscribe to my Patreon.

For member rewards, the most popular answer was interactive fiction. 75% of respondents chose interactive fiction as one of their top picks or their only pick.

For goals, there wasn’t a clear winner. The most popular goals were all tied:

  • Focusing on writing & superhero work full time
  • Spending a set number of hours on community service in general
  • Developing my Climate Fiction & Climate Nonfiction bookshops
  • Starting a writing contest related to climate justice, Real-Life Superheroes, or Southern Illinois

Patreon Next Steps

While there are still some details to work out, this is definitely enough information to help me determine the next two big steps for my Patreon.

Step 1: Interactive Fiction

The first step will be adding interactive fiction to my member rewards.

I love interactive fiction, so I’m excited to see how this turns out! There are several types of interactive fiction, so it may take time and experimentation to figure what formats, themes, genres, etc. my members are most excited to read.

If you like interactive fiction too, subscribe today for as little as $1 and help decide what kind of interactive fiction I create!

My first thought is to use Twine to create and share one or two standalone gamebook-style interactive stories. This will give my members a chance to decide if they like seeing stories from me in that format. I’m also considering other approaches to interactive fiction. This includes the less common collaborative gamebook or addventure style where readers can become co-authors and write portions of the story themselves.

Step 2: New Goals

The second step will be setting new goals.

Goals are a great way to build a successful Patreon campaign. They’re great for members and great for authors like me. They’re a way for me to gradually scale up the work that I’m doing for the campaign as more funding (and thus more time) becomes available. Goals can inspire members and artists alike to promote the campaign so that we can reach the goals together. When a new goal is reached, members get more content and I get more time to work on my writing and other Patreon-related projects. Everybody wins.

The goal that I’m most excited about personally is focusing on writing & superhero work full time. This pairs well with some of the other popular goals like spending a set amount of time on community service and developing my Climate Fiction and Climate Nonfiction bookshops.

It may take time for me to figure out the details of how to break that down into several successive goals. I’ll need to consult with my current members and write out detailed plans for how to reach each goal and act on the goal once it’s reached. Stay tuned for more news within the next two weeks about the details of these new goals and how I plan to reach them.
