You walk across the charred earth
with your head bowed
searching the broken bones
for answers.
Black ashes cling to your boots
like dying hope
in a forgotten wasteland
consumed by the burning thirst
of greed.
It was green here once
but all that remains
of the tall family of trees
is the whimpering echo
of burnt bodies
crunching beneath your feet.
Ashes to ashes,
dust to dust,
forest to clearcut,
and the broken bones
of a fallen forest
are forgotten.
