Not Even I

I am the Lorax! I speak for the trees,
but you extract profit however you please.
You market to children, their dreams mined for gold
which parents exchange for the trinkets you’ve sold.
And when you have stolen the very last dream
and chopped the last tree, and spoiled the last stream
you notice a world full of cold, vacant stares
and decide on the spot that you’ll sell back their cares!
You’ll sell them the Lorax, who speaks for the trees
and put him in movies to sell SUVs.
For surely the Lorax will brighten their day
and surely he’ll say what you want him to say.
This Lorax you’ve crafted, he may be a lie
but he will inspire them to buy and to buy
as the gasoline burns and the smoke fills the sky
and no one is left to ask the world why.

Not even I.
