The Butterfly

Your touch is soft and simple.
You smile at the sunrise
with glowing eyes that reflect the dawn.
Your words flow like a river
and I am drawn into your world
like a tide reaching for the moon.
You hug me goodbye
and I don’t want to let go
because I can almost taste the kiss
that we might never share.

But you are like the butterfly
that lands on my open palm.
If I close my hand to keep you
my greed will crush this breathless moment.
I’ve made that mistake before
because I didn’t want love to fly away
but today my trembling hand
will stay open.

You dance like a wildflower.
Your laughter is like a songbird
and your smile is sweeter than chocolate.
Your cheeks have felt cold tears
but you never lose sight
of the rainbow after the storm.
You keep your friends close
and my parched lips
thirst for the kiss
that would bring us even closer.

But you are like the butterfly
that lands on my open palm.
If I close my hand to keep you
my greed will crush this breathless moment.
I long to be close to you
like a dewdrop kissing a flower
but today my trembling hand
will stay open.

Your voice soothes me.
We spend hours talking
and your spirit make me smile.
The road has many turns
and I don’t know which way
the hills and prairies will lead us.
We may kiss beneath an ancient oak
or share a friendship like the swaying grass
but as we walk hand in hand
why worry about the destination?

You are like the butterfly
that lands on my open palm.
If I closed my hand to keep you
my greed would crush this breathless moment.
You might stay with me forever
or fly away tomorrow
but today my trembling hand
stays open.
