A very merry unbirthday to you! My birthday is coming up on May 19. I’m not having my usual big party this year because spreading a deadly virus isn’t my idea of a good time. Therefore, all celebrations that involve friends will have to take place online this year.
I invite you to celebrate with me online! In lieu of gifts, here are a few suggestions for how you can celebrate my birthday with me.
- Have Your Own Party at Your Place. Do something enjoyable that you don’t do on a regular basis. It doesn’t even have to be anything I would enjoy. Play some music, have a dance party, have a picnic or other adventure outdoors (with appropriate distancing), watch some movies, play some games (online or offline), whatever feels like a party to you. Tell me about it if you get a chance. We can’t have big gatherings out in physical reality right now, but we can still party on our own terms.
- Give My Books to Someone. This is a two-for-one gift! Giving my books to someone counts as a gift to them AND as a gift to me. It’s two for the price of one. Remember to Rate, Review, and Recommend (The Three R’s) any books that you like, especially books by independent authors. That counts as yet another gift. Three gifts in one!
- Support Drilled News, Hot Take, and Heated. These three climate-related projects offer some of the best climate reporting and commentary available. “Support” can mean listen to the podcasts, read the newsletters, donate in my name, or just help spread the word. Even if you’re not usually a climate person, one of these podcasts will surely draw you in.
- Take A Creative Climate Action. Do something creative, interesting, funny, quirky, or daring in support of climate justice and tell me about it. Write a poem or song, paint or draw something, dress up like a climate superhero in front of some relevant landmark, and so on. The sky’s the limit. We all know about the usual action steps like writing a letter to Congress or going to a march/rally. But I enjoy hearing stories about more creative climate actions. There are eight billion people on this planet, so there must be at least eight billion ways to support climate justice. Tell me yours.
Thank you for celebrating my birthday with me! If your birthday is coming up in the next 365 days or so, let me know how I can celebrate it with you. There are many challenging things going on in the world right now, but even in the midst of an apocalypse, there are still reasons to celebrate.
